Oumuamua
Oumuamua
The fact that this band has quality and has become a permanent fixture in the alternative guitar scene has long been chiseled in stone(s). Their fourth album – the first on Noisolution – brings the trio’s tried and tested mix and surprises with new strengths.
“Oumuamua” – actually the name of the first interstellar object in our solar system, which was discovered by an exploration station in Hawaii. A cigar-shaped celestial body discovered in September 2017 and initially frantically referred to as an alien spaceship. The artwork and the song “Cosmic Cigar” show the band’s fascination with this chunk of rock – and of course a certain proximity to spacerock.
If you read old reviews, however, you will find the band in other pigeonholes. Indie-inspired guitar-based noise rock. Desert blues. Fuzz rock, stoner, space or hard rock and always a Sonic Youth button on the greasy denim jacket.
Their new album brings the trio’s tried and tested mix and surprises with new strengths. In addition to their polished songwriting and feeling for fine sounds, the band is increasingly characterized by their “double lead vocals”. When two such expressive singers share the mic, it’s a class of its own – and a commanding grin for the ratings discussion in rock.
