“Sieben” seems to be another one of those magical albums that are different, fascinating and captivating. ROTOR play to their strengths with aplomb. They groove endlessly, play together and complement each other perfectly. They have their own unmistakable sound, make heavy stoner sounds seem weightless at their sweaty concerts and bring headbangers to a communal escalation, as is usually the case with herbaceous techno tribals. There is definitely Krautrock in there and – who knows – maybe some other herb.
In late summer, the quartet moved into an old dance hall in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and brought along all the equipment needed for a recording. Charlie Paschen (Coogans Bluff), cleared out his studio in Leipzig and so they recorded in a vacation-ready atmosphere, which was then mixed in Leipzig in the usual atmosphere and mastered at the “Institut für Wohlklangforschung”.
The result has more space, is more transparent and lighter in sound, almost relaxed, right up to the moment when the groove machine kicks in. The band has grown and since Martin Fischer joined on second guitar ten years ago, everything has become more playful, perfectly harmonized with a lot of finesse and it takes time to discover it all.
