The trio fascinates with its power and energy, with its magic on stage and with “The Band” brings an album that could have unfolded its magic in any era of rock music. Because despite the fascination for sound and style, this debut album is above all songs. Songs that grab you and won’t let go. Songs that get you singing, dancing and drumming. True rock’n’roll is black. Its roots are dark black. And HODJA bring all this back to the surface. A magic that is hard to resist.
“Devil On My Back” is just as deep black and full of soul. “My Soul Must Be Black, I Got The Devil On My Back”. There it is again, the story of the sale of the soul.
“She’s So Heavy” – the title sets the tone: What a song, what a voice? A riff with tons of weight and pure rock’n’roll wisdom: “Life’s a pill, so swallow and try to relax… It comes so easy if you don’t hold anything back”. Nothing more needs to be said.
“Arlene”, on the other hand, creeps up quietly and soulfully, atmospheric and relaxed. It is reminiscent of LOU REED and develops into a mighty grower that ends powerfully and majestically.
“Going Down” comes with glorious gospel backing vocals and grooves. What this album always does subliminally, it gets you moving, grooving and rolling.
“Jesus Rolls” – a sermon. The pounding bass drum and the guitar in dialog. And then, of course, the final
“Why Why Why” – a song for eternity, a love song, but so melancholy, so sad, so questioning everything. You should buy this album for this song alone!
